Teacher Resources
Learning about wastewater and stormwater is fascinating, and there are a variety of tools available to teachers who are interested in exploring these topics with their students. Vallejo Flood & Wastewater District provides high-quality educational programs to students in the greater Vallejo area.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Tours
The District offers two ways to help students in grades 4 and 5 understand water in our environment:
- Free field trips to our wastewater treatment plant. The District covers the cost of the bus, and tours last one and a half hours. Teachers often choose to add a short visit to the VALCORE Recycling Center nearby before returning to school.
- Free classroom presentations with lively presenters and a stormwater model. In-class presentations last approximately one hour.
Prior to the tour, teachers receive videos and classroom projects to help prepare students. In-class presentations include videos and workbooks. Material presented during the field trips and in-class presentations directly support the California Science Content Standards for Earth Sciences.

Watershed Explorers
Vallejo third grade classes can explore their watershed along the banks of the Carquinez Strait between Vallejo and Benicia through Watershed Explorers. This free program utilizes science and place-based learning to build awareness and understanding of how stormwater affects the unique ecosystems of local creeks and watersheds and how peoples' behavior plays an important role in watershed health.
The program centers on a four-hour field trip and is led by professional environmental educators from Solano Resource Conservation District. Students take a two-mile hike, participating in field discussions and activities. At the end of the program, students have a greater awareness of the outdoor, natural world in their watershed.
Pre-field trip, in-class lessons are available for teachers to prepare students for the fullest experience during the field trip. For more information please contact Marianne Butler at 567-674-5611.
High School Creek Biomonitoring
The District works with the Solano Resource Conservation District to provide high school creek biomonitoring experiences to select classes at Jesse Bethel and Vallejo High Schools. For more information about this program, contact Marianne Butler at the Solano Resource Conservation District at 567-674-5611, or Jennifer Kaiser at Vallejo Wastewater at 707-652-7812.
